Medview Airline flight develops fault mid air causing panic among passengers

A Medview Airline flight took off from Lagos for Abuja today but developed a fault soon after take-off, causing the plane to return to the Lagos Airport.

The plane with flight number VL 2102 was airborne, carrying 105 people; passengers and crew members inclusive, when the fault was noticed.
A passenger on the flight revealed that there had been suspicion of a fault before take-off however, the pilot and crew members assured them that everything was fine.

“They want to kill over 100 passengers with their faulty plane,” a passenger, Oladejo Olowu, told Premium Times.

The plane was scheduled to get to Abuja before making a final journey to Yola, Adamawa State. Just a day before the Medview incident, a Boeing 737 aircraft belonging to Air Peace had one of its tyres burst while preparing for take-off at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

22-year-old woman dies of Lassa fever in UCTH

22-year-old Christabel Itodo died of Lassa fever at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH. The deceased had taken ill in Benue state and was being treated there before requesting to be transferred to Cross River state so she could be close to her soldier husband stationed in Calabar.
As at the time she was admitted to UCTH after being taken to a couple of other hospitals in Calabar, the illness was already in a critical stage. Sadly she died within 12 hours of being brought into UCTH.

Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Thomas Agan, confirmed the incident. He, however, revealed to reporters that they were on top of the situation and there was no cause for panic. He went on to reveal that all hospital personnel who attended to the deceased have been quarantined.

Kenya threatens legal action against American series '24 Legacy' for using Westgate attack clip

The Kenya Films Classification Board (KFCB) has threatened to take legal action against the new American series '24 Legacy' for using a clip of the Westgate mall terror attack.

In a statement released today, the head of KFCB, Ezekiel Mutua condemned the broadcaster, FOX TV, for evoking the painful memories of the tragic terror attack.

'The Board regards the movie as a repulsive, insensitive and reckless piece of art that heartlessly evokes the painful memories of the tragic terror attack. It flies in the face of basic consideration of human dignity, in total disregard of the feelings of the victims and their families.

In the statement, he also demanded an immediate pull down of the clip.

'The Kenya Film Classification Board takes great exception to this unfortunate and unprofessional video by 24 Legacy and demands that the airing of the video be suspended forthwith.'

The Westgate Shopping Mall tragedy was an attack where Al-Shabaab militants killed at least 67 people with more that 175 wounded in a mass shooting, which took place in Nairobi.

Fox News apologises to Kenya for using Westgate terror attack footage

Fox News has apologised to Kenyans for using footage of the Westgate mall terror attack in a new series '24 Legacy.'

The American series aired the video of how the terrorists shot and killed civilians at the mall in September 2013.

The apology came one hour after the Kenya Film Classification Board demanded that Fox News pull down the footage, with Kenyans on social media tweeting at Fox under the hashtags #SomeoneTellFox.

In a statement released through Quartz media, a Fox Studios spokesperson confirmed that the footage used was of the mall attack.

'The producers very much regret using it to depict a fictional act of terror on the show,' the spokesman told Quartz media.

Executive producers Evan Katz and Manny Coto said they were sorry for the pain they caused victims.

'We apologise for any pain caused to victims and their families and are deeply sorry. It will be removed from all future broadcasts and versions of the show,' the two told the media

A yet to be identified suspected cult member shot and killed a 300 level Education Economic student of the Imo State University, Chidi Opara.

It was gathered that around 10pm on Wednesday night, February 22, the alleged cultist confronted the 24-year-old student around Bishop Court Area (IMSU backgate) and attempted to snatch his phone. When the deceased resisted, the alleged cultist reportedly pulled out his gun and shot Chidi to death. His corpse has been deposited in the mortuary.

Thursday's sermon is far from the first time Francis has targeted Christian hypocrites. In a sermon last February, the outspoken pope called out the "fakeness" of some Christians, who talk piously, but do nothing to help others. 

"To be a Christian means to do the will of God and on the last day because all of us we will have one that day what shall the Lord ask us? Will He say: 'What you have said about me?' No. He shall ask us about the things we did." It isn't the first time the Pope has mentioned atheists, either.

Breaking News: 9 Months after winning the EPL, Leicester City sacks Claudio Raneiri

This is the official statement by English premiership football club, Leicester City announcing the sack of it's first team coach, Claudio Ranneiri. 

Claudio, appointed City manager in July 2015, led the Foxes to the greatest triumph in the Club’s 133-year history last season, as we were crowned champions of England for the first time. His status as the most successful Leicester City manager of all time is without question. 

 

However, domestic results in the current campaign have placed the Club’s Premier League status under threat and the Board reluctantly feels that a change of leadership, while admittedly painful, is necessary in the Club’s greatest interest.

Celebs react on Twitter after Club sacks over-weight goalkeeper for eating pie while playing Arsenal

Celebs have taken to Twitter to express surprise, shock and disappointment after Sutton United football club forced its overweight goalkeeper, Wayne Shaw to resign from the club for eating a pie on Live television during Arsenal's 2-0 win over the club in the FA Cup replay match on Monday, after the club discovered that he had knowledge about bets placed on the incident.

A betting company, SunBets  offered 8/1 that Wayne, 46, would eat a pie in Monday’s game, and then the second choice goalkeeper ate a pie during the match. According to FA rules, its a crime for a footballer from any of England's 8 divisions to participate in betting and it's believed he participated in betting for him munch the 'pie'.

Reports also emerged that the bets placed on him eating the pie were done by Wayne's friends .

Sutton United on Tuesday afternoon then forced him to resign leading many celebs to criticize the decision of the club with an online petition asking for the club to re-employ him reaching nearly 100 signatures and the term 'piegate' tending on Twitter.

Football analysts are also incensed at the development as incidents like Luis Suarez biting a player at the World Cup, racially abusing Patrice Evra, Eric Cantona kicking a fan and Zidane headbutting a player has never led a club to sack these players so why should Wayne's case be treated so harshly.

Wayne told the BBC’s World at One:

 “In no way did I put anyone in jeopardy of that - this is not the case here, this is just a bit of fun and me being hungry.

Wayne also claimed it was a “pasty” — although Sun Bets still paid out as the definition of a pie is a “filling totally encased in pastry”.

Gambling Commission director Richard Watson warned last night: “Integrity in sport is not a joke and we have opened an investigation to establish exactly what happened.”

"Love, love, and keep loving with joy!" Italy's oldest nun shares tips for long life on her 110th birthday

The oldest living Italian nun celebrated her 110th birthday on Monday, February 20th. Sister Candida Bellotti, who has lived through two world wars, ten popes and 57 prime ministers, shared some tips for anyone hoping for anyone to live an equally long life.
She was born in Verona, and first became a nun in 1931, joining the order Ministre degli infermi di San Camillo and working as a nurse in hospitals and care homes across the country.

In 2000, at the age of 93, the nun moved to the motherhouse of the convent, where she takes an active part in community life and is known for her lively and joyful attitude.
She celebrated the milestone of reaching 110 with other members of the order and the Bishop of Lucca, Italo Castellani, while Pope Francis sent his birthday wishes.

The pontiff "participated spiritually in the shared joy of the happy anniversary, sending deep congratulations and heartfelt wishes," a blessing sent from the Vatican said. Sister Candida met the pope in 2014 on her 107th birthday, when she joined in a mass at Rome.
But what are her secrets to longevity?

"Take things as they come," she told journalists gathered at the convent for the cake-cutting ceremony.  

"Love, love, and keep on loving - with joy!" added Sister Candida, and offered a particular piece of advice to the younger generation. "Have faith in the future, and put in as much work as you can to make your wishes come true."

The nun explained that her own wishes had been fulfilled by carrying out the work of the convent.

"Throughout my life, I have always thought to myself: Where God puts me, that is the right place for me," she explained.

"I threw my 4 year old daughter's corpse into a canal because I had no money to bury her"- Father tells court

49 year old father of nine, Adekunle Adewusi, told the Magistrate Court in Ebutte Meta, Lagos, that he disposed the corpse of his 4 year old daughter, Rachael, in a canal close to his home at Folorunsho Kuku Street, Opebi, Ikeja because he could not afford to pay mortuary bill and also because he couldn't buy a land to bury her in.


According to police prosecutor, Kehinde Omisakin, who arraigned the suspect before the court, Adekunle and his wife who is currently at large, carried out the unjust act on February 9th.

While testifying in court, Mr Adewusi said his daughter had returned home to inform them that while she was playing, she fell after one of her friends pushed her on the ground. They took her to a Pharmacist who advised that they take her to the hospital. Lack of money forced them to take her home. Her condition detoriorated and she died later in the night.

“I wasn’t aware she fell. She was telling me and the mother that the place where she goes to play, a girl called her by her name Rachael, pushed her into the canal and she hit her stomach on a sharp object. We carried her to a nurse who advised us to take her to a General hospital but because there was no money I bought her blood tonic syrup. She is my sixth child and we don’t have any picture of her. When she died there was no money to take her to the mortuary and there was no money to buy land and bury her. So that’s why my wife and I decided to put her corpse into a sack bag and kept her body beside the canal where we lived. Which we later throw her inside the canal at Monkey Village Opebi, Ikeja Lagos.” According to the police prosecutor, Adewusi's offence contravened sections 411 and 165 (a) (b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The Magistrate, T.A Elias, thereafter ordered he be remanded at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti. The case has been adjourned till February 27th.

Company employee goes missing with $100M

Today, Power and robotics firm ABB announced that it has "uncovered a sophisticated criminal scheme" at its South Korean unit after noticing that huge sums had been stolen after the treasurer of the subsidiary disappeared about two weeks ago.

ABB said the treasurer, who has not been identified, is suspected of forging documents and working with individuals outside the company to steal the money.

The embezzlement and misappropriation of funds is limited to South Korea, where ABB employs about 800 staff. ABB spokesman Domenico Truncellito said, 'we're looking at every option. We are investigating externally and internally as well."
