Book Excerpts

On Drinking Garri “Living or studying in 'obodo oyibo ' does not magically make you better than anyone else. Feigning a 'britico ' accent will not get you anywhere and will not make you appear more widely traveled or more 'foreign'. It’s perfectly normal for you to continue to be the same person behavior wise and accent wise. It is okay for you to still like drinking garri  or eating bole with groundnut. It’s not necessary for you to suddenly claim to be 'mixed-race' or start bleaching for heaven’s sake. Your experience should teach you new and exciting things.”

On Racism “With racism, it’s not a clear-cut ceiling you have that is blocking you from going in the direction you want to go. Yes, having a name like ‘Abayomiolorunkoje Abayomi’ will cause a few eyebrows to rise, but the biggest ceiling you have comes from the one in your mind. Being black does not make you inferior. If you were hired by a company to simply fill the race diversity quota, don't feel for a second that that means you are not qualified.”
